Bat Walk at Sani Wetlands
Guided evening walk with a bat researcher
Overview
Bat Walk at Sani Wetlands
Bats see perfectly well. After dark, we're the blind ones.
While Kassandra winds down for the evening, the Sani wetlands are starting their shift. A single bat can eat up to 2,000 insects in a night. Those include a good share of the mosquitoes that would otherwise find you. All of this happens above our heads, in complete silence. Or so it seems: bats navigate and hunt using ultrasound calls, pitched too high for human ears.
That's why we use a bat detector. It translates their calls into clicks and rhythms we can actually hear. We see in frequencies how they buzz for feeding, social calls, the sound of a hunt in real time. For two hours, you get to eavesdrop on a world that's always been there.
You'll walk with Dr. Ioanna Salvarina, a biologist who has spent over 10 studying bats in Halkidiki. She'll show you how to read the detector, tell the species apart by their calls, and answer everything you've ever wondered about the only mammal that truly flies.

Ioanna · Bat Biologist
I grew up in Afytos, the village people call the prettiest in Halkidiki. I studied the coastline here for my thesis, interviewed the people who care for it, and learned that visitors were quietly hungry for the real thing. Konxa is how I offer it to them.
